One of the most common things I hear from moms before booking a newborn session is this:
“I really want photos with my toddler… but I’m nervous about how it’s going to go.”
And I completely understand. Toddlers—especially ages 2–4—are full of energy, emotions, opinions, and unpredictability. They’re not always interested in sitting still or smiling on cue… and that’s okay.
Because here’s the truth:
✨ Some of the most meaningful images come from exactly that stage.
Why Including Your Toddler Matters
This season—bringing home a new baby while your “baby” is still little—is something you can never recreate.
The way they look at their sibling.
The curiosity. The pride. The sometimes chaos.
It’s real, and it’s beautiful.
And capturing that connection? It’s one of my favorite parts of what I do.
Let’s Set Expectations
(the Right Way)
If your toddler is 4 or under, here’s what I want you to know:
We are not aiming for perfection.
We are aiming for connection.
That means:
* Your toddler does not need to behave perfectly
* We don’t expect them to sit still for long
* We follow their lead instead of forcing poses
And because of that, we actually get images that feel natural, emotional, and true to your family.

My Approach During the Session
Over the years, I’ve found that the calmest, most enjoyable sessions happen when we ease into things—especially when toddlers are involved.
Here’s how I structure my newborn sessions with little ones:
We begin with baby first
I have mom arrive with baby to start the session while everything is quiet and calm. This allows me to capture those sleepy, curled-up newborn images without any distractions—and it gives me time to fully settle baby into the flow of the session.
Dad and toddlers join a little later
Once we’ve gotten into a rhythm, dad will arrive with your toddler. This makes a huge difference. Instead of walking into a long session and being expected to “perform” right away, your toddler is coming in fresh, with more energy and curiosity.
It sets them up for success.
Then we move into family + sibling photos
At this point, baby is already prepped and settled, and your toddler is just arriving—so we can focus on connection without rushing or overwhelming anyone.
We keep this portion light, flexible, and quick. I guide gently, follow their lead, and capture what naturally unfolds.
After that, toddler is done
Once we’ve captured those moments, your toddler can relax, have a snack, or head out if needed. No pressure to stay the entire time.

Tips to Help Your Toddler Feel Comfortable

Here are a few simple things that make a big difference:
• Keep it positive and simple
Let them know they’re coming to take pictures with baby—no pressure, no big buildup.
• Bring snacks + a favorite comfort item
Even if we don’t use them, it helps them feel secure. I have snacks but having their faves might help more.
• Trust the process
You don’t need to manage every moment—I’ll guide things in a way that feels easy and natural.
Expecting Your Second (or Third) Baby?

If you’re reading this and wondering how a newborn session will go with your toddler…
I want you to know—you’re not alone in that feeling.
Almost every mom I work with has that same thought at first. And by the end of the session, they’re always surprised at how easy and relaxed it actually felt.
You don’t have to figure everything out ahead of time.
You don’t need a perfectly behaved toddler.
You don’t need to stress about how it’s all going to come together.
That’s what I’m here for.
From timing and flow, to guiding your toddler, to making sure baby is safe and settled—every part of the session is designed to feel calm, supported, and taken care of.
